Overview
American Tower is a leading independent owner, operator, and developer of telecommunications property and equipment with over 143,000 sites worldwide. OnSite is a browser-based application developed to capture tower site inspection data.
Challenge
American Tower needed a legacy application adapted to accommodate integration with new systems and business processes, but the older application was confusing and difficult to use. The UI and user flow through the application needed basic usability improvements in addition to the backend technology upgrades.
Result
The application navigation structure was modified from its original convoluted architecture into an easily comprehensible multi-level pattern with a dashboard starting/ending point and an informal step-wise movement between areas of each inspection form. Users could conduct management-level tasks on downloadable site packages at the top and then enter an offline mode for data entry suitable for work locations where data connectivity was unreliable.
Much effort focused on reducing or eliminating points of interaction to simplify the task flow as much as possible. Additional effort went into keeping users apprised of completion status across form pages.
